Please see the attached for the Show Bill and the show results.Croft State Park SC Trail Ride, April 12th.
It was great
to see 8 fox trotter owners the weekend of April 13 at Croft State Park in
Spartanburg. Donna and Jim Mathenia had a good trip down from VA on
Wednesday and rode Thursday. Bobby Turner was there just Saturday camping
with his 2 granddaughters. Carolyn Marshall provided a
wonderful BBQ for Friday night along with coleslaw and broccoli salad. We
enjoyed potato salad, and bean salad and could have fed the whole camp! As
usual eating is a high priority and we were not disappointed. Saturday
morning we woke up to a breakfast casserole cooked all night long in the
crock pot that was delicious. When Carolyn started unpacking , Nancy Smith,
a member of one of Carolyn’s other clubs asked her if she had anything left
at home. I was sure she was going to pull out the kitchen sink at any time
from the back of her truck.
Carolyn, Hollis and Nancy planned to
camp Thursday and ride, but Mother Nature and an unscheduled doctor’s
appointment for Hollis dampened our plans! Severe storms rolled in
Thursday night and we were glad we put off our trip until Friday
morning.
After we got the horses settled in Friday, Carolyn,
Donna, Jim and Nancy took a slip and slide ride through the Rocky Ridge
trail which could have looked like a scene out of “War Horse”. When we got
back to the barn all the horses got a bath and the riders were in great
need of one. But we all agreed anytime you come off the trail safe and
sound it is a good ride. None of us had ever ridden that particular trail
before. It was pretty but a bit challenging.
Visitors Nancy, Guy,
Lynda, Jessie, and members Donna, Jim, and Carolyn rode out Saturday at
about 10:35 from the barn Saturday morning. Tori Campbell and Nathalie
Miller were spotted up ahead of us so of course Carolyn hollered until they
heard her and they came back for a trail side visit before heading off
again. We rode to
the radio tower and stopped for lunch and fellowship then
here comes Tori and Nathalie again. The trails were drying up and our
trusty steeds worked their way through any mucky patches left over from
Thursday’s rain. We enjoyed Wisteria, Jessamine, Dogwoods, Redbud and an
azalea along the trails. The scent in the woods was heavenly! We got back
to the barn at 2:30, having made several stops to rest throughout the
day.
On Sunday Carolyn, Jim, and Donna Mathenia, and Frank, and
Deborah Chappell rode foxtrotters together. We got into wasps and one horse
bucked down the hill. Carolyn’s horse popped over a big log and she
plopped onto the ground unharmed. Jim and Donna were run up on by 3 Walkers
barrelling up the trail straight up to
them with no intention of slowing.
But it was a fourth glorious day of riding in a row. There is a newly
opened portion of the Palmetto Passage there which is opened to riders. We
didn’t ride it but we all wondered where the dirt road went to the right
there (we went left)….Next time
perhaps!
